ANR Wave Bend

Bends the image with a travelling sine, triangle or square wave: flag waves, wobbles, zigzags and sliced glitch looks.

Overview

Wave Bend shifts the image back and forth in a regular wave. The wave travels in the Direction you set and pushes pixels at right angles to it: at 0 it runs across the frame and bends the image up and down, like a flag.

Amplitude is how far pixels move and Wavelength the distance between peaks, both in pixels. Speed moves the wave by itself, in waves per second; Phase shifts it by hand. Profile changes the shape of the wave: a smooth sine, a zigzag triangle, or a square wave that cuts the image into offset bands.

Use it for waving flags and banners, underwater and dream wobbles, retro and glitch slices, and title animations.

Inputs

SourceMaskWave BendOutput
  1. Sourcerequired

    The image to bend.

  2. Maskoptional

Limits the effect: where its alpha is black, Source passes through unchanged.

Output. The bent Source, premultiplied and covering the project format. What fills the edges, where pixels are pulled in from outside the image, follows Outside Source.

Quick start

  1. Add ANR Wave Bend after the image.
  2. Set Amplitude (how far pixels move) and Wavelength (the distance between peaks).
  3. Set Direction: 0 sends the wave to the right and bends the image up and down; 90 sends it upward and bends the image sideways.
  4. Set Frames per Second to your project's frame rate. Speed sets how many waves pass per second: 0 holds the wave still, negative values reverse it.
  5. Choose the Profile: type 0 for a sine, 1 for a triangle, 2 for a square wave.
  6. Keep Outside Source at 1 (or 2) on full-frame plates; 0 leaves transparent gaps at the edges.

The panel

The node's panel as Nuke shows it, with the values of a new node. Click any control to see what it does; tabs and sections work as in Nuke.

All controls

ANR Wave Bend10 controls
AmplitudeSlideramount

Displacement amplitude.

Default: 20

WavelengthSliderscale

Distance between wave peaks.

Default: 100

DirectionSliderangle

Direction the wave travels; displacement is perpendicular.

Default: 0

SpeedSliderspeed

Cycles per second.

Default: 0.5

PhaseSliderphase

Manual phase in cycles.

Default: 0

ProfileSlidershape

0 sine, 1 triangle, 2 square.

Type 0 for sine, 1 for triangle, 2 for square. Values in between snap to the nearest of the three, so profiles cannot be blended.

Default: 0

Frames per SecondSliderfps

Playback timing; set to your project frame rate.

Default: 24

Start FrameSliderstart

Frame corresponding to time zero.

Default: 1

Outside SourceSliderborder

0 transparent; 1 clamp; 2 mirror. Rounded down.

What fills the areas the bend pulls in from outside the image: 0 transparent, 1 repeats the edge pixels, 2 mirrors the image. Values in between round down.

Default: 1

MixSlidermix

Blend with unmodified Source; multiplied by optional Mask alpha.

Default: 1

Tips

  • Key Amplitude from 0 up and back to 0 for a wobble transition, or for a hit on a beat.
  • Profile 2 with a short Wavelength and Direction at 90 slices the image into bands shifted left and right, for a quick glitch look.
  • Stack two Wave Bends at different directions and wavelengths for a looser, water-like wobble.
  • Animate Phase instead of Speed when the wave must reach exact positions on given frames.
  • For a weaker bend, lower Amplitude rather than Mix: Mix fades between the bent and the original image, which can look doubled.

Good to know

  • The result always covers the project format: anything outside it, such as overscan, is cut off.
