ANR Audio Bars

Turns a music or sound WAV file into animated spectrum bars, in a row or around a circle, for music videos, lyric videos and audio visualisers.

Overview

Audio Bars reads a WAV file and draws its frequency spectrum on every frame: low frequencies on the left, high on the right, each bar as tall as its band is loud. Radial Layout wraps the bars around a circle instead.

The sound comes straight from the file in WAV File: the node does not use Nuke's audio track and plays nothing. Frames per Second and Start Frame tie the file to your frames: on the Start Frame, the bars show the start of the file, shifted by Audio Offset.

Inputs

SourceMaskAudio BarsOutput
  1. Sourceoptional

The image the bars are drawn over. Leave it empty to render the bars alone on transparency.

  2. Maskoptional

Limits where the bars appear: where its alpha is black, Source shows unchanged.

Output. The bars over Source, or alone on transparency with their own alpha, covering the project format.

Quick start

  1. Add ANR Audio Bars. Connect a background to Source, or leave it empty.
  2. In WAV File, browse to your track.
  3. Set Frames per Second to your project's frame rate and Start Frame to the frame where the music starts.
  4. Play: the bars follow the music. Adjust Gain until the loudest bars just reach full Height.
  5. Set Bands for the number of bars, and Low Frequency and High Frequency for the range they cover.
  6. For a ring, set Radial Layout to 1 and Baseline to 0.5 to centre it in the frame.
  7. Choose a Color, then place and size the graph with a Transform after the node.

The panel

The node's panel as Nuke shows it, with the values of a new node. Click any control to see what it does; tabs and sections work as in Nuke.

WAV FileFileaudioFile

PCM or IEEE float WAV; averaged to mono. Empty means silence. File changes are reloaded on the next render.

Default: empty

BandsSliderbands

Frequency bands, rounded to an integer.

Default: 48

Low FrequencySliderlow

Hertz.

Default: 40

High FrequencySliderhigh

Hertz, limited to the file's Nyquist frequency.

Default: 16000

GainSlidergain

Spectrum amplitude multiplier.

Default: 8

HeightSliderheight

Maximum graph height as a fraction of project height.

Default: 0.5

BaselineSliderbaseline

Project-relative vertical baseline.

In the row layout, the height the bars rise from (0 bottom, 1 top). In the radial layout, the height of the ring's centre.

Default: 0.15

Audio OffsetSlideroffset

Seconds added to playback time.

Default: 0

Radial LayoutSliderradial

Zero: bars; one: bars around a circle.

Below 0.5 the bars stand in a row; from 0.5 up they ring a circle. It switches the layout; it does not blend between the two.

Default: 0

ColorColourcolor

Colour of the bars.

Default: 0.400000006 0.6999999881 1

Frames per SecondSliderfps

Playback timing; set to your project frame rate.

Default: 24

Start FrameSliderstart

Frame corresponding to time zero.

Default: 1

MixSlidermix

Blend with unmodified Source; multiplied by optional Mask alpha.

Default: 1

Tips

  • The bars always span the full frame width, and the ring is always centred left to right. Use a Transform after the node to place and size them.
  • If every bar sits at the top, lower Gain; if they barely move, raise it.
  • Narrow Low Frequency and High Frequency to the part of the music you want to watch, such as the bass or the cymbals.
  • Audio Offset slides the sound against the picture, in seconds: a positive value shows later audio on the same frame.
  • To hear the track while you sync, read the same WAV with Nuke's AudioRead node and pick it as the audio of a Flipbook.
  • Use ANR Audio Trace on the same file for a matching waveform.

Good to know

  • Only uncompressed PCM (8, 16, 24 or 32-bit) and 32 or 64-bit float WAV files up to 512 MB are read. Convert MP3, AAC and other compressed audio, RF64 files and WAVs in the extensible format to a standard WAV first.
  • Stereo and multichannel files are mixed to mono.
  • An empty WAV File is silence. A missing or unreadable file makes the node error.
  • Times before the start of the file or after its end are silent, so no bars show there.
