ANR Hex Repeat

Repeats one patch of the image in every cell of a honeycomb grid, for insect-eye views, kaleidoscopic backgrounds and graphic music-video looks.

  • Creative
  • Comp & Depth pack
  • 2 inputs
  • 8 controls

Overview

Hex Repeat fills the frame with hexagonal cells, and every cell shows the same patch of the image, centred on Source X and Source Y. Cell Radius sets the cell size, Source Zoom how much of the image fits in a cell, and Rotation turns the patch inside each cell.

Key the patch position, zoom or rotation and every cell moves together, which turns any footage into a busy, hypnotic background. Cell Gap separates the cells with transparent borders.

Inputs

SourceMaskHex RepeatOutput
  1. Sourcerequired

The image the patch is taken from.

  2. Maskoptional

Limits the effect: where its alpha is black, Source shows unchanged.

Output. The honeycomb pattern, covering the project format. With Cell Gap above 0, the borders between cells are transparent.

Quick start

  1. Add ANR Hex Repeat after your image.
  2. Set Cell Radius for the size of the hexagons, in pixels.
  3. Set Source X and Source Y to the part of the image to repeat, as fractions of the frame: 0.5, 0.5 is the centre.
  4. Adjust Source Zoom: above 1 it magnifies a small detail, below 1 it fits more of the image into each cell.
  5. Add Rotation or Cell Gap to taste, then key any of them for motion.

The panel

The node's panel as Nuke shows it, with the values of a new node. Click any control to see what it does; tabs and sections work as in Nuke.

All controls

ANR Hex Repeat8 controls
Cell RadiusSliderradius

Distance from hexagon center to a corner.

Default: 70

Source ZoomSliderzoom

Zoom into the repeated source patch.

Default: 1

Source XSlidercenterX

Project-relative source patch center.

Default: 0.5

Source YSlidercenterY

Project-relative source patch center.

Default: 0.5

RotationSliderrotation

Rotate the source patch in each cell.

Default: 0

Cell GapSlidergap

Fractional border between cells.

Width of the transparent border between cells, as a fraction of the cell. At 0 the cells touch.

Default: 0

Outside SourceSliderborder

0 transparent; 1 clamp; 2 mirror. Rounded down.

What fills a cell where the patch reaches past the edge of the image: 0 transparent, 1 repeats the edge pixels, 2 mirrors the image.

Default: 1

MixSlidermix

Blend with unmodified Source; multiplied by optional Mask alpha.

Default: 1

Tips

  • For an insect-eye look, lower Source Zoom until most of the picture fits in every cell.
  • With Cell Gap above 0, merge the result over a colour or another image to fill the gaps.
  • Use Mix or Mask to bring the pattern in over only part of the frame.

Good to know

  • The grid itself is fixed to the frame: you move what is inside the cells, not the cells.
  • The output covers the project format; Reformat the image to it first if it differs.
