ANR Elastic Reveal

A transition from one image to the next through a rubbery ripple and turn, for dreamy, wobbly or psychedelic cuts between shots or titles.

Overview

Elastic Reveal crossfades from Source to Next while both images ripple and turn in opposite directions. The distortion grows from nothing at the start, peaks halfway and settles back to nothing at the end, so the transition leaves and lands on clean images.

Key Progress from 0 to 1 over the transition. At 0 the output is exactly Source and at 1 exactly Next, so the node can stay in the tree for the whole shot.

Inputs

SourceNextMaskElastic RevealOutput
  1. Sourcerequired

The outgoing image, shown at Progress 0.

  2. Nextoptional

The incoming image, shown at Progress 1. Left empty, the transition dissolves Source away to transparency.

  3. Maskoptional

Limits the effect: where its alpha is black you see Source unchanged, even at Progress 1.

Output. Source at Progress 0, Next at 1, and in between both images warped and blended, covering the project format.

Quick start

  1. Add ANR Elastic Reveal. Connect the outgoing shot to Source and the incoming one to Next.
  2. Key Progress at 0 on the first frame of the transition and at 1 on the last.
  3. Go to the middle of the transition, where the distortion is strongest, and set Distortion and Wave Size.
  4. Add Twist to turn the images around the frame centre, or set it to 0 for ripples only.
  5. If the edges of the warped frame look wrong, try another Outside Source value.

The panel

The node's panel as Nuke shows it, with the values of a new node. Click any control to see what it does; tabs and sections work as in Nuke.

ProgressSliderprogress

Zero is Source; one is Next.

Default: 0.5

DistortionSlideramount

Peak displacement at the middle of the transition.

Default: 100

Wave SizeSliderscale

Distortion wavelength.

Default: 100

TwistSlidertwist

Peak rotation around the image center.

Default: 30

Outside SourceSliderborder

0 transparent; 1 clamp; 2 mirror. Rounded down.

What fills the areas the warp pulls in from outside the image: 0 transparent, 1 repeats the edge pixels, 2 mirrors the image.

Default: 1

MixSlidermix

Blend with unmodified Source; multiplied by optional Mask alpha.

Default: 1

Tips

  • Set Distortion to 0 for a crossfade that only turns, or Twist to 0 for a pure ripple.
  • A large Wave Size gives broad, rubbery bends; a small one gives a busy, watery ripple.
  • With Next empty, the image wobbles away to transparency, which works as an exit for a title merged over a background.

Good to know

  • Progress starts at 0.5, so the node shows the middle of the transition until you key it.
  • Source and Next should both match the project format: Next is used at its own size and position, not fitted.
  • Mix and Mask blend back to Source, not to Next.
